A/N: well... finally, after several years of observing from the edges of the Buffyverse and commenting, I hope constructively, on quite a few fanfics, here's my first post. I wrote this towards the end of last month; was checking the movies for the prompt, and found the title for this drabble within three seconds, on the IMDb page for 'Carnival of Souls' and thus lost any excuse for not posting it to more than a few people I knew. Those who did read it, and, thankfully, sent me their pretty positive responses will spot a couple of changes, but only minor ones.
This is my first ever Buffyverse fic, that isn't about Willow, and/or Tara, that is.

Behind her back she's "The Slayer".... and other things they should be too young to understand.

To her face? "Sir", or "General"; in their bunks, in hushed tones, "She".

Or "Her".

Why does she always carry a lighter, when she doesn't smoke? Why when they run out does she always head for London?

Nobody knows about the headstone, inscribed with a name and two, improbable, dates; lit by one, eternally aflame, cheap lighter.

Or why she always brings back a whole case.

Or always returns from Dublin.

Never her name.

Never just... "Buffy".

I like it! I think you did a good job of showing where Buffy would be after NFA, as well as how the other slayers might feel about her. And in a very few well-chosen words. Good job.

It is post-NFA, at least a possible post-NFA, because Buffy is also mourning the people that her two great loves were, when they were 'alive'.

interesting has always been a great compliment in my book. My favourite fanfics, and fanfic authors have always been the ones who've made me see, and consider, new possibilities for characters I might not have liked, or understood, on the show.

So, while I may not have liked the direction that Joss took the show, post-S5, Buffy was certainly a more interesting character as the show developed.

I really enjoyed your choice to showcase Buffy's isolation by addressing both the loneliness of her leadership role with the slayers and her choice to keep her grief private. The sparse wording works well, I got all teary eyed. Thanks for sharing.
