Silently, Buffy entered the house by the kitchen door. After a late night of patrolling with Angel and rescuing babies and thwarting the Mayor's plans the night before she was dead on her feet. The only thing she wanted to do was grab a quick snack and go to bed. But her plans were interrupted by a whispered argument going on in the living room. Although she knew better than to eavesdrop, after hearing her name she couldn't resist.
"How am I supposed to explain this to Buffy?"
"Joyce, try to relax. We will think of way."
"It's all good and well for you to be calm about all of this, Mr. Giles but I can't."
Giles couldn't help but smile. As catastrophes go this was way down on the list. "Don't you think after all that has happened between us that we should drop all of the formal pretences."
Joyce blushed to the roots of her hair as last nights memories assailed her but managed to hold on to her misgivings. She grabbed the piece of paper lying on the table and began to wave it. "This isn't something to smile about, Mr. Giles."
"Ripper." He crossed his arms and waited patiently.
"Fine. Ripper. How can you be so calm? This paper says that we're married.” She placed a shaking hand upon his chest and stared worriedly into his eyes. “What are we going to do now?"
Whatever he was going to say was lost as Buffy interrupted.
"Married?" Buffy yelled from the doorway. After hearing that tidbit there wasn't anyway she could keep silent.
Joyce stepped away from Giles and held out her hand. "Now, Buffy don't panic. It's true that Mr. Gi.. Ripper and I are married but..." She trailed off as Buffy interrupted once again.
"Don't panic? As if! When? Why? How did this happen?" Suddenly a thought occurred to her. "This was because of that cursed chocolate you ate. But the effects should be over by now, right?"
Giles ignored the hopeful tone in Buffy's voice. The chocolate consumption might have brought them together but it wasn’t the reason he had married Joyce. Not by a long shot. As he continued the story, he reached for Joyce and pulled her to him, wrapping his arms around her. "I found the papers this morning in the floor in the front of my car. I guess they were thrown there when Joyce and I were.."
Buffy blushed as a heated glance passed between her mother and her watcher, she quickly and loudly cleared her throat. "Never tell me about that part. Go on."
"Apparently sometime late last night Joyce and I got married in Las Vegas. This was the part where you came into the room."
She grabbed for a chair and managed to sit down before her knees buckled. "So what happens now?
"Your mother was just asking me almost that same question when you came in. Let me answer you both." Giles smiled down at the woman in his arms. It had taken him a very long time to get her there and he wasn't about to let her go. "We're going to live Happily Ever After."
Complete silence met his declaration and he wasn’t shocked by the skepticism that plainly showed on both of their faces, after all this was Sunnydale and things had been known to get a little horrific once in a while, he quickly amended. "We're going to live Happily Ever After...sort of."
