Title: Still Part Of The Family

Word Count: 820
Prompt: 095
Characters/Pairing: Lorne, Angel
A forgotten sea breeze sat on the table beside Lorne as he bowed his head and traced the picture that he held in his hands. He had almost forgotten how much he hated this time of year. All of the so-called holiday cheer made him sick. Made him remember what he didn't have anymore. Fred.
It had been a long time since she'd passed away but to him it still felt as if it were yesterday. He missed her so much. There were times he would have sworn he could still hear her voice. And although some days were better than others, the holidays were always the hardest.
Especially Thanksgiving, it was supposed to be a special time in the human world. One where they give thanks for the good things in their lives. And he knew that his friends had a lot to be thankful for. Not the least of which that they had survived the last battle with Wolfram and Hart.
But Lorne wondered exactly what he was supposed to be thankful for this holiday season. Fred's passing, the fact that he would never see her again or that a blue god king inhabited the body of the woman that he'd once loved. That he still loved.
"Lorne."
His elbow knocked the forgotten drink to the floor as he jerked in surprise at the familiar voice. "Angel, how did you find me?"
A smile pulled at the corners of Angel's mouth as he answered. "I know a demon who knows a demon."
Lorne completely ignored Angel’s attempt at humor and shook his head sadly. "Go away, Angel. I told you not to look for me."
"You also said that I wouldn't find you but I did." Angel couldn't quite keep the smugness out of his voice. Not that finding him had been all that hard. A red eyed, red horned, green skinned demon kind of stood out in a crowd.
Wearily, Lorne rubbed his hand across his eyes. The only thing he wanted was for Angel to leave so he could go back to missing Fred in peace. "What do you want, Angel?"
"Well, if the mountain won't come to Mohammed..." Angel gestured towards the door as Gunn entered the room carrying what looked to be the world's largest turkey. Followed closely by Spike and Wesley carrying boxes of delicious smelling dishes. But Lorne ignored them; his eyes fixed on the doorway.
They all turned in unison to see what had Lorne looking so stunned.
Illyria stood in the doorway, the exact image of Fred.
"I keep forgetting she can do that." Spike whispered quietly.
"I don't." Wesley whispered. It almost didn't hurt him anymore to see her take Fred's form. Especially since she'd used it to comfort him while he thought he was dying. Nobody, not even him, understood exactly why he hadn't; maybe the Powers That Be had something to do with it. Or maybe not. Whatever the reason he was just glad he was here. Illyria’s brusque tone brought him out of his musings.
"I can assume this form if you wish it, Lorne. If it will make it easier for you to bear my presence."
Lorne turned his head away. He couldn't imagine anything worse. "No god, please don't."
Illyria stared at Lorne as she shook off the image of Fred. "Perhaps I shouldn't have come."
Gunn watched the strained exchange. "Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all Angel."
It took a few moments before Lorne was able to control his emotions enough to speak. "Why are you here?"
Angel sighed. This wasn’t going at all the way he’d hoped. It was time for plan B. "Our family was broken. Whether you like it or not Lorne you're still part of this family. You always will be. I know we've all had rough spots and haven't always gotten along. But that's what families do. Sometimes they fight and argue but through it all they love each other and stick together. It's way past time to put this family back together again. Now do we sit down and enjoy a Thanksgiving meal like a loving family is supposed to or do I need to sing a rousing verse of 'We Are Family' to get us all in the togetherness mood?"
"Oh dear god, someone set the table quick!" Gunn exclaimed, pausing long enough to grab both boxes from the others before he hustled through the room to the kitchen.
Everyone but Angel laughed at his antics. "Well Lorne, what do you say? Are we still a family or do you need convincing?"
Lorne smiled at the determination in Angel's eyes. If it meant that much to Angel, he was willing to try being a family once again. It wouldn't bring Fred back but maybe, just maybe it would make the loneliness less. And on the plus side it would keep Angel from singing.-
